Events

In keeping with its unique role as the only tertiary care hospital in Israel dedicated exclusively to children, Schneider Children’s Medical Center arranges a wide variety of public events throughout the year. These range from professional medical conferences and symposia to charitable events to raise funds for specific equipment, programs or departments. Fundraising events are held under the auspices of the volunteer organization, Friends of Schneider Children’s.

Tuesday, October 5, 2010: State-of-the-Art Pediatric Imaging Seminar
Dr. Paul Babyn, Radiologist-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto, Canada, will be the guest speaker at the imaging seminar. The proceedings will commence at 08.30 in the Felsenstein Auditorium, 14 Kaplan Street, Petach Tikvah. Further details will be forthcoming.

Thursday, October 28, 2010: Partnership Meeting with Cincinnati Children’s
Following the signing last December of an agreement of cooperation between Schneider Children’s and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, USA, the two institutions will host a Partnership Meeting that will feature key speakers and specialists from Cincinnati. The topics will focus on pediatric surgery, colorectal treatment and anorectal malformations. The meeting will take place in the Felsenstein Medical Research Center Auditorium, 14 Kaplan Street, Petach Tikvah. Proceedings will commence at 13.00 with a light lunch.

Thursday, November 25, 2010: Seminar on Multidisciplinary Approaches to the Treatment of CRPS in Children
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic progressive disease characterized by severe pain, swelling and changes in the skin and has been diagnosed in children as early as the age of 2. The cause is currently unknown, and there is no cure. The seminar will focus on multidisciplinary strategies for the treatment of CRPS in children including medical care, physical therapy, and psychological support. It will take place in the Felsenstein Auditorium, 14 Kaplan Street, Petach Tikvah and commence at 08.00. Further details will be forthcoming.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010: Thalassemia and Other Hemoglobinopathies Seminar
In conjunction with Ha’emek Hospital in Afula, Schneider Children’s hosted its Sixth Annual Seminar for practitioners who treat patients with Thalassemia and other Hemoglobinopathies. The proceedings culminated with a special presentation by distinguished guest of honor, Dr. Ronald Berenson, President and CEO of MeaQuest Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Seattle, USA, who spoke about “The Effects of HQK-1001 on Increasing Hemoglobin Levels and Fetal Hemoglobin”.


Thursday, July 8, 2010: Pediatrics in Disaster Areas in Developing Countries Seminar
Following Schneider Children’s experience in disaster areas and most recently in Haiti, Dr. Elhanan Bar-On, Director of the Pediatric Orthopedic Unit and Dr. Ran Steinberg, Director of the Pediatric Organ Transplantation Unit, organized the seminar in order to establish a body of pediatric health professionals who are prepared to travel within various frameworks to disaster areas. Presentations focused on the various characteristics of disasters and medical care in the Third World as well as personal experiences.


June 16, 2010: Failure to Thrive (FTT) and Develop Conference
The conference, organized by the Day Care Hospitalization Department, featured
a range of specialists from Schneider Children’s including an endocrinologist, psychiatrist, FTT physician and nurse, occupational therapist and dietician.
The conference, aimed at medical professionals and the public, highlighted such issues as hormone mechanisms for hunger and satisfaction, and emotional behavior intervention for infants and families.


Wednesday, June 2, 2010: Cochlear Implants Seminar
A celebratory event to mark the first decade of cochlear implantation at Schneider Children’s took place at the beginning of June during which a seminar for professionals was held. Guest speakers included Prof. Yehoash Raphael, of the University of Michigan, USA, who discussed hair cell regeneration, and Dr. Andrzej Zarowski of St. Augustinus Hospital in Belgium, who reviewed contemporary approaches to bilateral cochlear implantation.   


Monday, May 31, 2010: Gathering of Parents and Grandparents of Children with Diabetes
A gathering for parents and grandparents of youngsters with diabetes took place under the auspices of the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes. Speakers included Prof. Moshe Phillip, Director of the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes; psychologist Alon Lieberman; dietician Gila Fayman; and nurse Michal Geva. An introductory workshop was also held about therapeutic aids for diabetes. According to Prof. Phillip, “Since grandparents are part of diabetic children’s lives and have a huge influence on their behavior and eating habits, we feel it is very important to train and share our knowledge with grandparents as well as parents.”


Monday, May 3, 2010: Prof. Rina Zaizov Annual Memorial Symposium
The annual symposium in memory of Prof. Rina Zaizov, Israel Prize laureate,
founder of Pediatric Oncology in Israel, and past Director of the Hematology-Oncology Department at Schneider Children’s, featured guest speakers Dr. Paul Gaynon, pediatric oncologist at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, USA, and internationally renowned cancer expert, Prof. James Nachman of Chicago Children’s Hospital in the USA.


Tuesday, April 27, 2010: Annual CF Conference
The Annual CF Family Conference updated youngsters and their families about the latest developments in the field of CF therapy. Speakers included Prof. Hannah Blau, Director of the Pulmonology Institute, and staff physicians, Dr. Huda Mutzaffi and Dr. Dario Price.


Wednesday, April 14, 2010: “Last Summer Days” Launching Ceremony
A special ceremony, under the auspices of Friends of Schneider Children’s, marked the launch of “Last Summer Days” – a personal memoir penned by the late Abraham Cykiert of Melbourne. The book reflects Mr. Cykiert’s impressions in the Lodz Ghetto during the first days of September 1942 and focuses on events that remained unique in the vast literature of the history of the Holocaust. Australian Ambassador to Israel, HE Andrea Faulkner and other dignitaries participated.


Wednesday, March 17, 2010: Tastes of Pediatric Neurology - 5th Annual Conference
The Institute of Pediatric Neurology hosted its 5th annual conference under the banner of “Tastes of Pediatric Neurology” for pediatricians and family doctors.
As previously, Institute specialists provided 10-minute updates in the field which was followed by a Q&A session.


Tuesday, March 16, 2010: “How Are You?” Conference
The Social Services Department at Schneider Children’s hosted a half-day conference about secrets and disease in children aimed at social workers, psychologists, medical professionals, and educators regarding the different
aspects of how adolescents and their families cope with disease. Among the
topics presented were The Meaning of Secrets in Children; Sick Children in the Ultra-Orthodox Community; and Obtaining and Protecting Information among Adolescents.
