The Institute of Neurology


The Institute of Neurology at Schneider Children’s annually treats about 9000 children, who suffer from various illnesses and disorders stemming from damage of the central nervous system. Institute specialists provide a broad range of multidisciplinary services for children with neurological, physical, developmental and language problems, and learning disabilities. A substantial proportion of the children are referred for second or third opinion, and come from all parts of Israel as well as from abroad.

Epilepsy Clinic


Epilepsy is a worrisome disorder due to seizures and their effect on every aspect of the child’s functioning, the need for medications and drug side effects, and repetitive blood tests and EEG recordings. Clinic staff provides comprehensive care to
youngsters from all over the country.

Neuromuscular Diseases Clinic


Clinic staff diagnoses and treats children with a range of neuromuscular diseases:

  • Proximal Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Neuromuscular junction disorders including congenital and autoimmune myasthenia
  • Congenital muscular disorders and muscular atrophy
  • Developmental motor disorders including hypertonia

Neuroimmunology Clinic


Clinic staff specializes in diagnosing and treating autoimmune inflammatory conditions of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Treatment focuses on evaluation, appropriate therapy, medications and follow-up. The latest immunomodulatory medications are individually prescribed where needed. Children are treated for the following conditions:

  • Spectrum of Demyelinative Diseases: Multiple Sclerosis, Optic Neuritis, Neuromyelitis Optica, Transverse Myelitis, and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
  • Limbic Encephalitis
  • Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome (OMS)
  • Vasculitis of the CNS\
  • Autoimmune Epilepsy

Neurogenetic Clinic


Clinic staff focuses on identifying genetic sources of neurological disease. Diagnosis assists both the child who receives the appropriate medical treatment without undergoing further tests, as well as his family which receives assistance in future family planning. Among the genetic syndromes for which children are tested:
  • Hypotonia
  • Spasticity
  • Microcephaly
  • Macrocephaly
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Movement disorders
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Diseases of the white and grey matter in the central nervous system

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Clinic


The clinic treats children with muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) and comprises a multidisciplinary team of a neurologist, orthopedist, pulmonologist, dietician and physical therapist. Children are treated by the Neurology Institute in Day Care to enable comprehensive evaluation by the various specialists. Parents receive a written report of the findings.
