The Institute of Neurology

The Institute of Neurology at Schneider Children’s annually treats about 9000 children, who suffer from various illnesses and disorders stemming from damage of the central nervous system. Institute specialists provide a broad range of multidisciplinary services for children with neurological, physical, developmental and language problems, and learning disabilities. A substantial proportion of the children are referred for second or third opinion, and come from all parts of Israel as well as from abroad.

Epilepsy Clinic

Neuroimmunology Clinic

Clinic staff specializes in diagnosing and treating autoimmune inflammatory conditions of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Treatment focuses on evaluation, appropriate therapy, medications and follow-up. The latest immunomodulatory medications are individually prescribed where needed. Neurogenetic Clinic

Clinic staff focuses on identifying genetic sources of neurological disease. Diagnosis assists both the child who receives the appropriate medical treatment without undergoing further tests, as well as his family which receives assistance in future family planning. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Clinic

The clinic treats children with muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) and comprises a multidisciplinary team of a neurologist, orthopedist, pulmonologist, dietician and physical therapist. Children are treated by the Neurology Institute in Day Care to enable comprehensive evaluation by the various specialists. Parents receive a written report of the findings.

The SMA Clinic

TThe Clinic for SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) at Schneider Children’s operates within the Institute of Pediatric Neurology, and treats infants, children and adolescents from all over the country.

The multidisciplinary clinic is headed by senior neurologist Dr. Sharon Aharoni and provides advanced care alongside research studies, in keeping with leading pediatric centers around the world. It is the only service of its kind in Israel authorized by the Ministry of Health to provide gene therapy for SMA (Zolgensma).

Initially, the child is examined by a neuromuscular specialist, who conducts an assessment and recommends further tests. Thereafter, the neuromuscular team comprising a pulmonologist, physical and occupational therapists, nutritionist, orthopedist and social worker, recommends an appropriate treatment plan designed to the needs of the child and his family.

Speedy clinical and genetic diagnosis of the disorder
Multidisciplinary assessment and treatment based upon the consensus statement for standard of care.
Pulmonary support
Regular administration under sedation of Spinraza (Nusinersen) within the framework of Surgical Day Care; the child is discharged after two hours
In complicated patients with spinal fixation Spinraza is administered by an Invasive Radiologist under X ray scanning in the Catheterization Unit.
