Prof. Lina Basel has been appointed head of the Institute of Genetics at Beilinson Hospital and Schneider Children’s Medical Center. Prior to her appointment, Prof. Basel was acting director of the Genetics Institute at Beilinson and director of the Genetics Unit at Schneider Children’s.

Prof. Basel has led studies in the discovery of new genes, which have been published in important professional journals in genetics around the world. Among the discoveries: a new gene that causes fatal epilepsy in children, a gene that causes a fatal degenerative disease in children, a gene that causes skin disease and hair impairments, and genes that cause mental retardation. Prof. Basel was recently elected chair of the Israeli Society of Medical Genetics.

Prof. Basel stated that “it is a huge honor to head the Genetics Institute, one of the leading genetic centers in Israel. Genetics is the medicine of the future. In this era of breakthroughs and new discoveries, research in this field is of monumental importance and every time we succeed in preventing a defect or accord a satisfactory life despite rare genetic syndromes, there is renewed rejoicing. The Genetics Institute comprises special clinics and patients are referred to us from all over the country. I hope to continue to advance the Genetics Institute both on the clinical level and service to patients.”
